Tyler Auto Shop Owner Sentenced to 60 Years for Fatally Shooting Teen

April 07, 2025 - Tyler, TX - Seferino Bautista-Renteria was sentenced to 60 years in prison in Judge Austin Reeve Jackson’s court for fatally shooting 19-year-old Rawly “Eli” Sanchez. The incident occurred on July 4, 2024, when Sanchez and two friends accidentally passed by Bautista-Renteria’s auto shop. Bautista-Renteria fired a rifle at their truck, killing Sanchez.

Testimony was heard from Sanchez’s family, friends, and former baseball coach, who described him as a beloved mentor and outstanding young man. His sister shared how the Tyler High baseball tournament has been renamed in his honor and spoke about the lasting impact of his death on their family.

After three hours of deliberation, the jury returned with a 60-year sentence. Bautista-Renteria will be eligible for parole after 30 years.
